Articles
Guitar Guru Guitar Guru Sessions allow aspiring guitarists to hear the music and see the left and right hand movements across a realistic guitar simultaneously, choose between computer-generated audio or use the audio CD (on select pieces), playback at variable speeds, select subtracks, set ranges, loop, and more.
Learn to Improvise Want to learn how to burn? Start with this four-part article; it'll get you a good way down the path. This is not instrument-specific -- it'll work for piano, organ, trumpet, banjo, guitar, etc!
Guitar Tab Explained New to tab? Try this article by Howard Wright.
Get Down! Tired of one position! Is your arm cramped from sticking in that same position at the beginning of the fretboard? Learn how to play up and down the neck -- it's easy when you use "crx" patterns!
Great Instrument Bargains! Find great deals on new and used guitars, basses, and other musical instruments.
More Musical Instrument Bargains Find even more bargains on new and used musical instruments, accessories, pieces and parts, software, school band or orchestra, etc.

Fantabulous Software!

There's some great software (shareware/freeware/commercial) to help you with guitar tab. Here are some of my favorites.
  • Quickbeat -- This is the product I've been looking for! Most musicians will agree that the best way to develop groove is by playing with a drummer. Drum machines are complicated, though -- and real drummers have their own special "quirks"! Quickbeat gives you great drum sounds AND it is amazingly simple to use!
  • TEFView From the TabEdit folks, this stripped down free version doesn't have all the bells and whistles -- but it probably has the ones you need.
  • Melody Assistant My personal favorite, it not only does TAB, it does ABC, MIDI, WAV, and who knows what else. Real low-cost quality shareware from a group in France!

    Tab Search

When I look for tabs, I usually start with this Tab Search Robot. The following search box will check thousands of tabs(!!!) -- just enter the song title, then press the search button!

    Cool Links!

Looking for tab directories, lessons, alternative tunings, articles, etc? Try these neat links!
  • Free Sheet Music The Mother of all Free Sheet Music Sites; bazzilions of links to free sheet music downloads (including guitar tabs), lessons, articles, and tips. Kinda disorganized, but that's part of the appeal. It's kind of like shopping in Filene's basement.
  • Classical Guitar Tablature Way neat! Hundreds of guitar tabs for classical pieces!
  • Guitar Resource Center A general online guide to guitar and music related resources (lessons, parts, tablature, links, and more).
  • Top 100 Guitar Solos (of all time!) Guitar tab and way cool! The top 100 guitar solos of all time as selected by the readers of "Guitar World". As expected, it's heavy on rock and non-existant on jazz, but it's still a good list. What makes it neat are links to tabs of the solos -- wail and shred like Jimmy or Jimi! (I must confess -- I am baffled how "Cinammon Girl" always makes these lists! And it beats "Scuttle Buttin'"!?!?!?!)
  • A Guide to Jazz Guitar : jazz guitar lessons, tabs, chords, licks, transcriptions, mp3 & more.
  • Blue Hen Records Jim Campilongo's (from Guitar Magazine) guitar-related site -- has a GREAT lessons portion. A recent lesson discussed how "The Best Rockabilly Players know how to spin jazzy lines over simple blues progressions." It not only discused the subject, it offered standard notation sheet music for the lesson! His "Guitar Tips" newsletter is also a treat.
  • Metal Tabs The guitar gods have spoken -- cranked up to 11! Seek the secrets of the Metal Masters no longer, for you shall find them here!
  • Soigne Records More really good online guitar lessons -- rock, jazz, country, classical.
  • Guitar Directory Your one-stop destination for anything you can think about guitar. This guitar directory designed to help its users find the guitar information, source, companies, products and services...
  • Vision Music More guitar lessons in tab AND standard notation! Also offers a "virtual" smokin's backing band -- load 'em up and they'll back you while you wail away! "The lessons at Vision Music are conducted by guitarist/bassist and Sugo Music recording artist Mark Stefani."
  • Guitar Primer Nicely done -- a guitar primer for adults, includes standard notation of popular folk songs, etc.
  • Guitar Masters When you're finished with "Guitar Primer", move up to this site!
  • Brent D. Stuntzner "I have over 100 pages of jazz solo transcriptions with TAB (for guitarsits), MIDI representations (for learning by ear) and Jam Tracks (for practice)." Really nicely done -- well worth a visit! I really like the MIDI accompanying the standard notation. Note that I said standard notation, not just tab! This is a good site for any treble clef instrument, not just guitars!
  • Brian Wilson Site Site honoring Beach Boy Brian Wilson -- includes lyrics and guitar tab.
  • Cyberfret Online College of Guitar Wisdom -- free online lessons and tabs.
  • Celtic Guitar Music Great source of celtic fingerstyle guitar tab (and standard notation -- good for fiddlers!), plus some free Celtic Harmonica arrangements!
  • Guitar Site 2000 guitars database. Huge resource for guitar information -- includes: artists, guitars, makers, music, resources, stores, tablatures, and teaching(lessons)!
  • Guitar Tabs I get a lot of email's asking for tabs and chord sheets; I normally point folks to OLGA, but Tab Robot is also a great resource with over 350,000 pieces! Remember, piano guys can also use the chord sheets!
  • Gary Shepherd's Bluegrass Index Lots of bluegrass tunes in tab (and lyrics) for Banjo(Check out the "Ballad of Jed Clampett!) Guitar Mando Dobro. Also banjo Lessons! Finally, there are "play along" MIDI backing-band arrangements -- let the MIDI accompany you while you play along!
  • Kenny Baker's Bluegrass Page Check out the "Licks 101" for some basic bluegrass guitar licks.
  • Arbuckle's Celtic Guitar Many tunes in Celtic tunings -- standard notation and tab.
  • Northumbrian Traditional Music "This webpage will examine the unique traditional music of Northumbria, an area encompassing the modern counties of Durham, Tyne and Wear and Northumberland. The site includes sheet music, guitar tabulature, abc notation and midi files. There is also a page which looks at the issue of performance anxiety."
  • Spencer Doidge's Classical Guitar ... and Fingerpicking Guitar page! To tell you the truth, I wasn't expecting to find the quantity and quality of pieces here that I did. Well worth a look if you're looking for classical or flatpicking guitar music.
  • Dan Mozell's Page. A lot of nice jigs, hornpipes, and other folksy tunes in GIF format. Also includes guitar tab along with the standard music notation GIF's.
